A couple of football related stories

Step up if you’re qualified to play for England

The BBC report today that the number of England-qualified players starting in the Premier League has dropped to an all-time low. Only 170 of the 498 players who made a start for a Premier League team this last season are qualified to play for England.

These are the facts, but what are we to make of the story. The report makes the point about quality being more important than quantity, but, at the same time, reminds us that England didn’t qualify for Euro 08. How can England’s fortunes turn around? Will a quota system work, as Sepp Blatter suggests? (As an Arsenal supporter I might be worried about that)!

The price of watching your favourite team

It’s reported today that season ticket prices at most Premier Football Clubs are increasing over and above the price of inflation. Many ordinary supporters are, unfortunately, being priced out of watching their favourite football team. Those who have supported teams for years are going to have to pay vastly inflated prices to watch their team next season.
